It is the Spring Term and Feet First are inviting schools to register and participate in active travel projects that encourage people to walk to school.
Feet First is now a flexible year-long project designed to help primary schools promote walking in fun and unusual ways. The project encourages walking safely and helps schools lower congestion around their gates.
On this site, teachers can submit stories about walking initiatives, order resources, enter the competitions, collect walking numbers, or any combination of these! So far, 30 schools have won $500 Sports Vouchers in Terms 1, 2 and 3. We have 10 more to be won in Term 4.
To enter and go in the draw for the sports vouchers, schools need to be registered for Feet First and then enter eight or more weeks of walking data.
Here you can read stories from other schools who encourage walking to school. You and your school may find the - free to download - curriculum resources useful for planning 2010 programmes that focus on community connections and include walking safely to school. There are inspiring inquiries within each curriculum area targeted at levels 1-4.
You can read about the great ideas that other schools have had to promote walking and register for Feet First 2009. Once registered you can order classroom resources such as posters, wallcharts and postcards in both English and Māori, and enter the competitions.

A huge number of entries impressed the judges and showed us the wonderful writers in schools.
If your school didn't get a chance to enter in 2009 go to our picture book page and look at Otonga School's winning entry. You can also see the highly commended entries by Nelson Central School, Mornington School, Gate Pa School, Thorndon School and Te Puru School.
The prize for the winning entry was workshopping the book with professional writer/editor Don Long and with professional illustrator Ali Teo.
The Feet First team are really looking forward to publishing 'Lucky Pancake'.
