We are inviting schools to register and participate in active transport projects that encourage people to walk to school.
Feet First is now a flexible year-long project designed to help primary schools promote walking in fun and unusual ways. On this site, teachers can submit stories about walking initiatives, order resources, enter the competitions, collect walking numbers, or any combination of these!
Schools can choose to participate in any way that suits them. In Term 1, 10 schools who entered their walking data on this site won $500 sports vouchers. We have 10 more to give away each term.
Our Picture Book Competition will provide the opportunity for one school or class group to have their own book about active transport professionally published and distributed.
For teachers, the website has - free to download - curriculum resources which provide inspiration and inquiry outlines, for curriculum areas.
We have created a resource for parents and caregivers to encourage them to support safe walking to school. This can be read online or ordered by registered schools. It is available in both English and Māori.
You can read about the great ideas that other schools have had to promote walking and register for Feet First 2009. Once registered you can order classroom resources such as posters, wallcharts and postcards, and enter the competitions.

Free breakfast for parents who walk their children.
The Active Travel Picture Book competition is now open! All schools can enter the Picture Book Competition, whether or not they are participating in any walking programmes.
There are lots of ideas in the Entry Pack and Getting Started resources to help inspire you. Schools can create and submit a book about walking using inspiration from life, history or students’ imaginations.
The Feet First team are really looking forward to reading the entries and publishing the winning book.
