Feet First 2009 encourages primary school students to walk to school with a caregiver, friend, or organised walking group at least once a week, every week, during term time.
This year Feet First also provides curriculum content for teachers to talk about walking in relation to safety, exploring, creativity, and saving the planet.
The Feet First 2009 project is a quiet one that works with, and beside, other projects including those already established in walking or cycling, projects which support the lowering of congestion around school locations, and health and physical wellbeing. Feet First 2009 compliments and supports school travel plans and walking school buses.
The 2009 approach is around encouraging learning opportunities and supporting safe walking. The goal is to get students and caregivers to walk more often, long term.
The benefits of children getting to school using ‘active transport’ are significant. More children walking to school means:
While walking, children are also learning sustainable transport habits for the future.
Teachers can draw from a range of comprehensive curriculum resources that link to the environmental, social, economic and health benefits of going on foot. This includes lesson ideas, unit plans, HOT topics and inquiry learning.
Students and teachers will have the opportunity to consider the wider issues related to walking such as urban design, community development or the environment. They could study family history looking at ‘how we used to walk to school’ or look at the health benefits of active travel.
During the year all schools can use the curriculum materials. Those registered for Feet First will receive other printed materials and can submit walking blogs, stories and case studies to this website.
