Inquiry Taster
You can download the document above for the comprehensive inquiry and context but below is a taster of what it offers.
- Identify walking activities and similar aerobic activities that students could participate in (walking, skipping, jumping, hopping dancing, riding etc).
- Highlight aerobic exercises that increase heart rate, breathing and make the muscles work faster.
- List all of the places they could walk to after school and in the weekends.
- Estimate how many steps they think they might do in a day. If you have access to a pedometer, let every student record their estimate and then put their actual result in beside it.
- Record these on Stick-it notes and start a ‘walking for fitness’ knowledge board.
- Collect quotes about exercise and put them on the knowledge board: “It is as easy as the first step”/“the only exercise that is bad for you is the exercise that you do not do” etc.
- Healthy food: define ‘healthy food’. Heart Foundation: Healthy: Healthy eating articles. Resources for healthy eating.
- Ministry of Health: Resources for schools. Resources for schools: Healthy Eating - Healthy Action
