Entries must be 16 pages long plus a cover. Entries can be submitted in hardcopy or digital format (like PowerPoint or PDF*) on a CD, DVD or USB stick. Entries can also be submitted through this website via your personalised school page which you can only view when logged in. If you haven't yet registered for Feet First you can do so here.
Pages should be presented as they would appear in a finished book.
Each entry must include:
A separate illustration for the back cover is optional as the front cover may wrap around.
Lesson activities explaining these layout requirements can be found in our Getting Started document.
The style of the book is up to the class. Entries could be fiction, non-fiction, a short story, or a poem. Hints on writing and illustrating are also included in Getting Started.
Classes should use only one illustration style for the whole book (for example, realistic drawings, cartoons, collage, or photographs). Students should also be aware that, if they win, they will have the chance to improve or redo their illustrations during the workshop.
The winning entry will be published as a full-colour book, about 260 mm high by 210 mm wide. Entries don’t need to be written and drawn to this size but the class should be aware that, if they win, their finished book will be printed to this size.
See also How to enter for other conditions.
*Digital illustrations need to be created at 300dpi for print reproduction. If your illustrations can't be created at 300dpi, create them on paper (and if you want to submit your entry electronically, scan them in). If you win the competition, the professional illustrator will work with your original hardcopy illustrations.
