This term students at St Joseph's School Pukekohe are making a big effort to walk to school on Friday mornings. With the help of Road Sense coordinator Val Stamper, and the school Principal Mrs Uasike, the class councillors have been responsible for driving this programme. Class councillors have spoken to classes and have displayed posters about Feet First in all classrooms. Reminders about the programme have been placed in the school newsletter. Every Friday class councillors visit classrooms to note the total number of students walking to school. Class councillors then work out which class has the highest percentage of students walking. A trophy and certificate from the principal is awarded to the winning Junior and winning Senior class.
On Friday 11 September, as part of the Feet First programme, the school had a Fancy Feet Day. On this day students who walked to school were invited to decorate their shoes or legs in innovative ways. Students were reminded that they were not permitted to paint their shoes or legs or use vivid makers to decorate them.
Prizes were awarded to the students who had the best decorated feet or legs. The response to the Fancy Feet Day was fantastic with many students taking up the challenge to decorate their shoes or legs. Decorations used included ribbons, flowers, stickers, pompoms, feathers, pegs, tinsel, balloons and different coloured shoe laces. The student councillors had a difficult time choosing winners. Prizes were awarded to a large number of students.
