Jimmy's Big Race

Jimmy's Big Race

Jimmy’s Big Race

Eilidh, Justin and Holly  Wakaaranga School

“Hey, Jimmy!” Yelled Rob, “Do you want to have a bike race this Saturday?” Jimmy wasn’t sure what to do; he was good at running but not biking.

“Okay”, said Jimmy. He didn’t want to hurt Rob’s feelings. “I’ll see you this Saturday but don’t forget!” said Rob.

The night before the race Jimmy tossed and turning his bed. He was afraid he would lose or hurt himself. Eventually he rolled over and fell asleep.

In the morning Jimmy told his Mum he had told Rob he was going to race him but Jimmy was too scared he would get hurt and lose.

“Don’t worry,” said Jimmy’s Mum “As long as you wear your helmet and knee pads, you should be fine”, she said in a comforting voice.

Jimmy felt better when he remembered that his helmet was there to protect him, so he decided to go to the race after all.

When Jimmy arrived at the bike track he saw all his friends geared up and ready to race. Rob must have invited them, thought Jimmy.

“Are you ready?” asked John as he lined up with everyone else. “Yes”, said Jimmy. As Jimmy looked down the line of people he realized how different and everyone was. Rob was American, John was English, Aroha was Maori, Kelly was Australian and Rahul was Indian.

“Right, on the count of three we go!” yelled Rob “ONE!” Jimmy mounted his bike. “TWO!” He had his feet and his hand in the right position. “THREE, GO!” Jimmy felt the wind in his face as he sped down the steep hill. Jimmy had taken off long before the others but they were steadily catching up with him. But Jimmy just pedalled harder and harder.

Finally Jimmy sped past the finish line in a blur. He had come first! Jimmy was very excited, he had never realised he was so good. Everybody cheered for Jimmy.” Maybe we should do this more often” said Kelly. “Yeah, that was fun”, agreed Rahul. “No it wasn’t “said Jimmy, “It was lots of fun”

When Jimmy go him he told his Mum how much he enjoyed it “ Maybe you should cycle to school instead of going by car”, said his Mum. And Jimmy did just that, but always remembered his helmet. Also he did regular checks which included the brakes, tyres and chain. By cycling to school Jimmy helped the environment, got fit, had fun all at the same time and he was road safe. I think he made the right choice do you?
