Caterpillar Feet

Caterpillar Feet

Caterpillar Feet is an initiative that came out of Tauranga City Council’s Kids on Feet under Travel Safe school travel plans. The parent volunteers involved in Kids on Feet in 2008 asked that a pre-school programme that encouraged pre-school parents and caregivers to walk, cycle, use push chairs to get to and from school rather than get in the car be introduced to kindergartens. Parents were keen to encourage communities to get out and reclaim back their footpaths and let children enjoy all the simple pleasures gained by walking to and from pre-school or park and walk part of the way.

After consultation with the local regional kindergarten involving community input, in 2009 Caterpillar Feet was piloted at three kindergarten / pre-schools. The children and parents find it a lot of fun. Caterpillar Feet is a simple programme for parents/care-givers to opt into. In 2010 it will have the opportunity to roll out to other kindergartens and pre-schools in Tauranga.

Caterpillar Feet is a Travel Safe initiative that has the capacity to be the beginning of pre-school travel plans for Tauranga city. Dan from puppet Vision is adapting a puppet show to share Caterpillar Feet at the pre-schools.
