Year 6 Students from Maungatapu School take part in the Kids Can Ride cycle safety programme. At the end of the programme those cyclists that have been successful in completing the programme are given a licence as proof . In addition to this the students that are cycling regularly to school are issued with flouro backpacks (as seen in the photo); this enhances their visibility and safety when negotiating traffic and pedestrians.
The Kids Can Ride programme is co-ordinated and delivered by Iris Thomas along with an experienced team of trainers.
In addition to this Maungatapu School also has a dedicated team of parents who co-ordinate the successful Kids On Feet programme operating to and from school daily to encourage walking and alternative methods of transport whilst promoting road safety to the students.
The NZTA Feet First walk to school every week has complemented both the programmes in place at Maungatapu School. The parents, students and staff continue to support the use of active transport and increase awareness of road safety not only at Maungatapu School but also in the wider community, Tauranga, New Zealand and worldwide.
