Darfield Primary School started a walking bus in 2008. With parent support the bus ran three days a week. Selwyn council provided safety vests for the children so they could easily be seen on those cold dark winter days. Even when the ground was covered in snow the walking bus continued, the children just rugged up and put on their gumboots!
The children love discovering lots of interesting things on their way to school, which often leads into interesting ‘news talks’ in class. Once a hat full of worms was collected!
Luckily the principal lives on the walking bus route and the children at times have him as their special bus member!
For the Walk to School Week, we are setting up more school walking buses to cover all routes of getting to school.
