iMove at Parkland School

iMove at Parkland School

iMove is about forming healthy and sustainable travel habits for the future. It is a fun and simple programme that encourages children to get to school actively more often.

Stamping cards are issued which are checked off each day the child walks/cycles/skates etc. When the card is full it goes in a prize draw for a number of cool prizes. Schools enrolled in the programme choose to run iMove days, weeks or months and are supported with resources and road safety partners to assist at the school gate.

Parkland School jumped on board the iMove programme in November 2008 and personalised it by running an iMove week followed by a month of Walking Wednesday’s. Of their 300 students, 217 walked to school every week during the programme and Parkland took out the regional trophy for most participants.

Typically iMove is run for a month in Term 1 and Term 4 with a focus on Walking Wednesdays or Biking Thursday’s. However, schools are encouraged to adapt the programme to best suit their school community and many schools now run week, fortnight, or term-long iMove programmes.

  • There were not many cars around school which made my job as road patroller a lot easier (Abbe, 10 years)
  • Fun because we got to walk for long distances and didn’t waste petrol (Aries, 9 years)
  • I liked the way those kids who don’t normally get the opportunity to walk, walked part of the way to school (Miss Young)
  • It really motivated my class to walk not just on Wednesdays (Ms Gonzales)
