This unit has been written for Primary student teachers who are learning about planning in Social Studies as part of their Bachelor of Education (Teaching) degree. The plan is based on The New Zealand Curriculum (2007) and the supporting curriculum booklets, 'Building Conceptual Understandings' published by the Ministry of Education in 2008. It is an example of planning using a social inquiry approach where teachers utilize three phases of inquiry: information gathering and processing using children's questions; exploration of values; considering responses and decisions
