Children and parents from Queenstown Primary School have been talking about the possibility of setting up a regular ‘cycle train’ following the success of the school’s Go By Bike Day in February this year. Over 200 children rode to school on the day, including 120 from Frankton and 50 from Arthurs Point. The school decided to organise skills courses for the children as well on the day, and road safety personnel gave a talk about road safety and good helmet fit.
As well as looking to set up a cycle train in term 4, the school also wants to trial the council’s ‘travel card scheme’ which encourages children and their families to walk, bike, carpool and take the bus. These initiatives are a way to kick start travel planning ideas with the potential to address congestion and improve road safety at the school.
