Street Smart in Waitaki

Street Smart in Waitaki

Welcome to the first newsletter in what I hope will be a regular once a term publication.

I will be using the newsletter to provide feedback on our programmes and showcase activity around the region. If any school would like to contribute their own article for the newsletter, I would be delighted to receive it.

2009 was a year of tremendous activity from participating schools.  I would like to thank school communities for your fantastic support of the programmes and subsequent student outcomes. The level of achievement was commendable and exceeded expectations with some schools data showing a demonstrable increase in students walking or biking to school.  We enjoyed a range of activities including Walkin n’ Wheelin Challenges, Weekday Walkabout, initiation of a new Walking School Bus, Travel Planning and Zeb the Pedestrian Crossing Zebra.   There was a significant increase in the number of safety vests distributed to schools and we also welcomed Totara and Ardgowan schools to Walkin n’ Wheelin.

Feet First Week will be celebrated during the first week of March with a Fancy Feet Day. Choose any day during that week and encourage the children to dress up their footwear in fun ways and walk to school. We have $300 worth of active transport library books to give away as prizes. For information, please contact me at Sport Waitaki on 03 434 9379 or email:halgar@sportotago.co.nz

The Golden Boot

Each school that registers will automatically be sent a ‘Golden Boot’ trophy. Schools can then award it each week/month/term to winning students or classes for their walking efforts

2010 Sports Vouchers

Schools that collect and enter data on the number of students who walk will be entered into a prize draw each term. There are 10 x $500 sports vouchers (Sports Distributors NZ Ltd) to be given away each term.

Schools don't have to collect the data for each week of the term to be considered. However they must have collected it for at least five weeks in Term 1 to be entered into that term's draw.
