Nayland School Celebrate their Feet First Success

Nayland School Celebrate their Feet First Success

Nayland School have been working very hard on their FeetFirst campaign since March this year. They have been collecting data daily about how children have travelled to school. There has been a trophy awarded at their weekly assembly to the class who have travelled in the most active way. Class 16 were regular winners of the trophy.

The students from the middle syndicate also entered an art competition promoting active transport to school. The winning entries (one from each class) will be used as designs for postcards which will be part of their road safety campaign based around the re-establishing of their Walking School Buses. These postcards will each have a different message raising awareness of children walking or cycling to school, including one about sneaky driveways. The postcards will be delivered to local residents along the WSB routes.

The artwork is currently on display at the children’s section of the Elma Turner Library in Nelson and will then be moved to the Active Transport stand at the annual Ecofest event in August.

News came over the school holidays that the school had won a $500 sports voucher for entering their data on the FeetFirst website. Both staff and students were very excited about this and are now planning how to use the voucher most effectively. Making sure they had entered their data proved very worthwhile for the school. Congratulations must go to the students who kept a record of the data for each class every day.
