Cardinal McKeefry students think Feet First

Cardinal McKeefry students think Feet First

An increasing emphasis on active transport through Feet First has been welcomed by Cardinal McKeefry School, in Wilton, Wellington, who have been involved in road safety education since the contract started in 2000.

Prue Chrisp, lead teacher, and staff have held a Walk to School day every term since they signed up with the Feet First programme. But walking only occasionally is not what they are about at all. Twice weekly walks involve senior classes walking with junior classes beyond the school gate to explore their neighbourhood.

They love their regular morning walks and in addition to improved fitness, teachers say the students return to school focused and ready for the day’s academic challenges.

As part of this year’s EOTC programme, senior students will walk approximately 2kms to the Botanic Gardens for an Amazing Race event and a picnic lunch. To add a dash of art and culture to their improved fitness programme, students will take part in the Sculpture Walk around Wellington’s waterfront.

Cardinal McKeefry School has now committed to the Greater Wellington school travel plan programme. Part of this process involves teachers, parents and the local council working together to highlight safe and sustainable transport options for the journey to and from school.
