Douglas Park School students are getting ready to hit the street on their feet after taking part in crossing safety sessions with Greater Wellington and the Wairarapa Road Safety Council.
The safety sessions were an initiative of the School Travel Plan Team to help educate the students about walking to school safely and to help alleviate parents concerns about road safety.
“When parents were surveyed one of their main concerns about their children walking to school was road safety. The Travel Plan aims to address these concerns and other issues raised” School Travel Plan Coordinator, Rebecca Jamieson said.
The safety sessions were part of Road Safety Week at the school. Other initiatives planned for the week include a student road safety skit put on at assembly, a launch of Walk and Wheel Wednesdays and road safety information sent home to parents.
The team are also hoping to role out a Walking Map which will help students and parents to choose safer crossing points and avoid hazard areas.
