Greater Wellington’s School Travel Plan Coordinator, Rebecca Jamieson is running a short story competition to encourage schools to sign up to Feet First and get walking.
“We want kids to find out what it was like for the older generation to walk to school. They can interview their parents, grandparents or neighbours, write a short story and submit it to their school to be chosen to go into the competition.
“It was much more common for our parents and grandparents to walk to school but now more than 50 percent of NZ primary kids are driven to and from school. That’s double the number from only two decades ago.
“It will be interesting to hear about the fun and adventures people had on the way to school 20 or more years ago.”
The Wairarapa Road Safety Council has kindly donated the prizes for the competition. The winning school will win $200 of book vouchers and have their story published in the Mid Week. Second and third placed schools will each win the “Walk It Bike It” road safety board game.
Teacher, Sandra McNab, will judge the entries. Sandra has recently been working with the Wairarapa Road Safety Council to write and illustrate "Annie Goes to the City"; a fun, easy to read story designed to help introduce road safety education at an early age.
To enter the competition schools will need to choose one story and send it in by Friday 27th March. All stories must be no more than 300 words. Entries can be sent to:
