Douglas Park School families got the opportunity to try out a new giant board game developed by Wairarapa Road Safety Manager, Ruth Locker and Greater Wellington's School Travel Plan Coordinator, Rebecca Jamieson.
The Walk and Wheel Game was developed as a School Travel Plan initiative to help educate students and parents about making positive road safety choices. Participants played the game by rolling a giant dice and moving up the ladder. Each square had a message and instructions on how far to move such as "You're wearing your cycle helmet, move forward 2 spaces" or "You were speeding past school, slow down and move back 2 spaces".
The game re-enforced road safety messages the students received during their crossing safety education sessions run by Ruth.
Ruth and Rebecca plan to make the game available to other School Travel Plan schools in the Wairarapa next year.
