Wairarapa urban primary schools will soon have support to promote active and sustainable transport in their school.
The Wellington Region’s School Travel Plan Programme’s local Wairarapa Coordinator, Rebecca Jamieson is kicking off the Wairarapa Walk or Wheel Wednesday Challenge in Term Four.
The Challenge aims to encourage more primary school children to get active on the way to and from school and will run through to the end of Term One next year.
Rebecca says the benefits of active transport are endless. “It can increase your child’s health and fitness; give them more independence and confidence; reduce congestion at the schools gate making it safer for your children and help the environment by reducing CO2 emissions from cars.”
There are already heaps of kids walking and cycling to school in the Wairarapa but Rebecca says the Challenge will help support schools to get even more kids out of cars and onto their feet and wheels.
Schools that sign up for the Challenge will receive Feet First resources and some great prizes to give out to outstanding active travellers in their school. The class with the highest percentage of active travellers will also win a class prize each term and Rebecca is available to visit the schools to help them get underway with the Challenge.
Greytown School in the Wairarapa are looking forward to the Challenge. They are already an active bunch and have a good number of kids walking and cycling to school. Greytown School teacher, Caragh Briggs says they “can’t wait to start the Challenge to reward those that are already walking and cycling to school and encourage even more students to get active!”
